was also called a Bramah press in honor of its English inventor, Joseph
Bramah, since it employs hydraulics as the counterpart of a mechanical lever.
This press was his creation, for which he received a patent in 1795. Bramah,
who is also credited with inventing the flush toilet, researched the literature
on the movement of fluids while he constructed toilets and used what he learned
to create the press.
The hydraulic press is based on Pascal's Law,
which states that pressure in a closed system remains constant. The system
consists of two pistons: one serves as a pump and exerts a tiny amount of
mechanical force on a small cross-sectional area, while the other has a greater
area and produces a much bigger mechanical force. If the pump is removed
from the press cylinder, all that is required is small-diameter tubing (which
