A pinion gear and output shaft are rotated by a piston and rack that move linearly in a rack-and-pinion actuator. Actuators with racks and pinions may have one, two, or more racks. A vane mounted on a central shaft and housed in a cylindrical chamber makes up a vane actuator. Upon pressurisation, the vane begins to rotate and keeps doing so until the stroke is finished. The vane rotates the shaft in the opposite direction when air pressure is supplied to the opposite side of the vane.
